Poles as a guarantee of quality? To most people, [Cumulus](/b/cumulus) means nothing at all. But in the world of ultralight sleeping bags, quilts and jackets, this Polish brand has built up a serious reputation. Above all, it managed to offer premium products at a fair price – although, let's be honest, like everything else, prices have crept up a bit in recent years. Still, I'd argue that whatever you pay for a piece from this brand comes back to you a thousand times over in comfort, and you won't regret a cent of it. A 5–10 year warranty (depending on the product) alone tells you Cumulus stands behind its quality. You don't need to worry about ending up with something that belongs on a bargain-bin table.

## **Incredilite Endurance Down Jacket**

In this review I'll focus on one specific piece – the **down jacket** [**Incredilite Endurance**](/p/cumulus-incredilite-endurance), which I've **been wearing since 2019**. It's been my companion on the Pacific Crest Trail, the SNP Heroes' Trail, the Kungsleden, and plenty of other trips including winter weekend hikes. I picked a down jacket from Cumulus mainly because of my great experience with the [Panyam 450](/p/cumulus-panyam-450) sleeping bag, which is, in my opinion, the best three-season sleeping bag on the market. Not that I've tested that many in my life, but its loft and durability **exceeded my expectations**.

Picking the right insulated jacket can be a bit of a puzzle, so it's worth starting with **what activities** **and especially** **how** **you'll be using the jacket**. I figured I'd carry the jacket packed away in my backpack most of the time and mainly wear it in the evening at camp. That's why I went with down. If I'd planned to wear the jacket during the day with a backpack on, I'd have leaned toward a synthetic option instead (for example the [Cumulus Climalite Full Zip](/p/cumulus-climalite-full-zip)) because of sweating. Down jackets are a bit **more demanding to maintain**, and washing a sweat-soaked jacket every week definitely isn't something you want in that case. Still, it felt worth having some protection against moisture, so I went with **the DWR-treated version (a non-treated one is also available)**. **I probably wouldn't go for that treatment on a sleeping bag,** to get the full natural benefit of the down, but on a jacket, where the risk of getting soaked is higher, it **makes more sense**.

### **140 Grams of Premium Goose Down (850 Fill Power)**

If you're experienced, you probably already know what “fill power” means. For everyone else, it's simply a measure of **fill power, meaning the quality of the down**. In practice, it indicates how well the jacket lofts up – in other words, **what kind of loft it'll have and how well it'll trap your body heat** (how warm it feels). It's also **an indicator of how fine the down is**. The higher the fill power, the finer the [down plumules](/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-down) – and here's the catch. Keep in mind that the finer the down, the more **prone it can be to clumping when exposed to moisture**. I wouldn't call it a hard rule, but generally I'd pick something in the 750–850 fill power range.

**140 grams** of **down** is more than enough for **year-round use**, unless you're heading out on winter expeditions. Paired with warm base layers, a midlayer and a shell jacket, you can comfortably hang around camp in **temperatures down to around -10°C**, unless you're an absolute ice cube. For me, this is a **brilliant piece for year-round use** if you don't want to invest in several insulated jackets for each season.

### **Slim Fit, Regular Fit, or Fit for the Rest of Us?**

A **good fit** is the **foundation of success**, especially for clothing that needs to wick moisture well or retain body heat. And this down jacket fits really well. I'd say it's cut more for an athletic build if you want it to look like the catalog photos. On the other hand, it never feels tight or restrictive – quite the opposite. The **sleeves and back are well constructed**, so even bending down to tie your shoelaces isn't a problem, and you don't need to worry about ripping the jacket with your muscles (which I don't have). The **back panel is only slightly longer**, though I wouldn't complain about an extra 5 centimeters. That said, I've never had an issue with an exposed lower back – the jacket stays put whether you're sitting or moving around. There's also a drawcord on the hem.

### **What I Loved Most**

**The hood on this jacket is the best part by far.** Sure, you'll look a bit like Gagarin on a space trip, but you'll never feel the need to wear a winter hat again. **It's perfectly adjustable** thanks to a rear **drawcord**, which you can even operate with gloves on. It also **has no brim**, which might sound like a downside, but it actually pairs nicely with a baseball cap. In worse weather, you just throw a rain jacket over it – one that does have a brim. That way the hood doesn't stick out anywhere and stays reasonably dry.

Another small detail I loved is the **cuff design**. It's a combination of a **Velcro closure** and **an elastic cuff**. I don't get why every manufacturer doesn't do this. You can slip the jacket off easily without undoing the Velcro, while it still **wraps perfectly around your wrist**. Someone clearly put thought into this.

**I also love the pockets on this jacket.** The **chest pocket** is perfect for your phone, and the two hand pockets at the waist let you warm up frozen fingers before getting back to your card game. From the **inside** there are **elastic mesh pockets**, handy for gloves or a hat you want to warm up. They don't have zippers, so I wouldn't recommend stashing your wallet there if you're planning any drunken snow dives. On the plus side, the lack of zippers means you don't have to worry about damaging your base layer.

The last thing I'd highlight about this piece is the **shape and cut of the baffles**. The size ratio is perfectly balanced – big enough for the jacket to reach its full loft, yet (except for a bit of shifting at the elbows) you don't need to worry about the down migrating and creating cold spots.

### **Final Verdict**

If you're not afraid to spend a bit more and want a down jacket that'll protect you on the trail and never let you down, the [**Cumulus Incredilite Endurance**](/p/cumulus-incredilite-endurance) is definitely a **great** **choice**. At a total weight of around **350 grams**, you'll barely notice it's in your backpack. **The build quality and loft durability** are excellent, and you can count on this jacket to **keep you warm whenever your partner or a bottle of gin isn't within reach.**
