# Upgraded Hyperlite Mountain Gear backpacks

HMG backpacks are among the most widely used on long-distance treks around the world. Now they've been redesigned – a new Dyneema Woven Composite material, construction tweaks, and new features. Perfect for life on the trek.

If you've ever hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, or the Continental Divide Trail, you've seen them on hikers' backs countless times. [Hyperlite Mountain Gear](/b/hyperlite-mountain-gear) backpacks have made a name for themselves with their **simplicity**, **ultralight construction** and **Dyneema fabric**, typically in white or black.

But Hyperlite isn't resting on its laurels. They decided to redesign their backpacks to make them **more practical, lighter, more durable,** and **above all, more comfortable.** One by one, the new design and construction changes have come to **the** [**Junction**](/p/hyperlite-mountain-gear-junction-40)**,** [**Southwest**](/p/hyperlite-mountain-gear-southwest-40)**,** and [**Unbound**](/p/hyperlite-mountain-gear-unbound-40-2026) **models.** Backpacks from this new generation bring one more major change: the material. Engineers at Dyneema, working together with Hyperlite Mountain Gear, created a new fabric they named **Dyneema Woven Composite.** It promises to take the lifespan and durability of HMG backpacks another notch higher.

## What's changed

Six things the new generation does differently:

1. **More durable material** – the new woven Dyneema (DWC) is more abrasion-resistant, lighter, still 100% waterproof, and nicer to the touch.
2. **Better back panel** – more comfortable and follows the shape of your body better. The Unbound now has two aluminum stays, so the load is distributed better.
3. **More comfortable shoulder straps** – wider, better shaped, and they won't dig in even when the backpack is heavily loaded.
4. **Practical features** – a redesigned ice axe loop, better compression straps, daisy chains along the sides of the rear pocket, a hydration bladder hose port, and more.
5. **Larger side pockets** – deeper and more practical, so you can pull out a bottle without taking the backpack off. They hold two large bottles.
6. **Simplified construction** – the seams are sewn on the inside, with no need for external binding. The taped seams remain.

## Which model is right for you?

All three models share the new material and the carry system, and each comes in two volumes – 40 L for a lightweight summer setup, 55 L when you're carrying more food or winter gear. They differ in the details that decide what living with the backpack will be like.

### Junction

The classic HMG design with a **mesh front pocket**. You can see what's inside, and a wet jacket or tent dries in it while you walk. Structurally it's identical to the Southwest – the pocket is the only difference.

### Southwest

The same backpack as the Junction, but the front pocket is made of **solid fabric**. It doesn't snag on branches and stones, and it holds up better in brush, on rocks, and off marked trails. The pick for rugged terrain.

### Unbound

The most minimalist of the three. **Removable hip belt**, elastic cords instead of side compression straps, simpler buckles, and a roll-top without Velcro. For those who want as few grams and as few extras as possible.

## Which volume should you choose?

If you're looking for a backpack for **shorter trips** or you're trying to get your pack weight down to a minimum, go for the 40-liter. If you're planning **longer trips** or your gear isn't fully pared down yet, the larger volume – 55 liters – will come in handy.

**External pockets** aren't included in this volume. So count on roughly **9 extra liters**.

## Dyneema Woven Composite

**How is it better?**

The Dyneema you know from HMG backpacks was DCH (Dyneema Composite Hybrid) for years: a layer of fibers loosely laid between two films. Extremely light and 100% waterproof. Because the fibers aren't woven, over time the surface film wore and the fabric cracked at the folds.

**Dyneema Woven Composite is woven.** The fibers are interlaced into a true woven fabric that's laminated to a waterproof membrane. It sounds like a detail, but it changes how the material behaves:

- **Higher abrasion resistance.**
- **Better performance at folds.** In places where the backpack constantly flexes, like the roll-top and the sides, the fabric won't degrade as much.
- **Still waterproof.** The membrane and taped seams remain.
- **Lighter than alternatives with the same durability.** Dyneema fiber has the best strength-to-weight ratio on the market.

## The test results speak for themselves

- abrasion resistance is up to **ten times higher**
- tear resistance is up to **five times higher**
- and yet the fabric is roughly **a third lighter** than other highly durable materials

**What does this mean in practice?** A backpack that can handle more seasons of long-distance treks without you having to deal with worn-through spots. Exactly the kind of gear you buy once. **Dyneema Woven Composite** is an evolution that gives backpacks greater durability and a longer lifespan while still keeping their weight seriously low! If you're looking for a reliable companion for long journeys, the new HMG backpacks are worth a look.
