Original vs. universal solutions

Basically, there are 2 types of footprints based on their potential use:

• original footprints, e.g., from Big Agnes, DD Hammocks or Sea To Summit, which are made for specific tent models,
• universal, popular, lightweight, compact, and affordable Tyvek groundsheet.

Why aren't footprints part of tents?

Maybe you're wondering why a footprint isn't provided with tents straight from the manufacturer and why you should even bother getting one. The answer is simple – compared to a built-in tent floor, a separate footprint is way more versatile and, just like a standard floor, it protects your tent and inflatable sleeping pad before dirt or puncturing. Plus, with the additional footprint, you have the option to set up some tents in Fast Fly mode – just the extra footprint with the rainfly. Not everyone will use it, and here the manufacturers give us the choice to buy it separately.

Groundsheet under tarp or shelter

If you go for a tarp, sheet, fly, or any other shelter without a build-in floor, you’re probably thinking about how to lay down so your gear doesn’t get dirty, you’re not exposed to ground moisture, and your expensive sleeping pad doesn’t get punctured. We have to recommend the extremely versatile Tyvek groundsheet again – you can find it with us in the version for one or for two people.

Another use for the footprint

You can also use the footprint separately without a shelter when sleeping under the stars (cowboy camping). In extreme conditions, you can hide under a larger footprint during rain showers, or sleep under it in suitable spots. A standalone footprint, which isn't directly built into the tent's structure, can always be easily replaced if damaged and adapted to the specific trek's needs.
