Down quilts
Light down quilts are a popular alternative to sleeping bags – basically, these are ultralight, packable quilts that are stripped down to save weight. On the back side, from the waist up, the inefficiently unused down has been removed because compressed down underneath you doesn’t really insulate and is practically pointless. You can simply attach the quilt to any type of sleeping pads (inflatable, foam) using a system of well-thought-out straps. When you sleep, a solid pile of down insulates you from above, while a sleeping pad does the job from below. Unlike a sleeping bag, a quilt doesn't have a hood, but you can easily replace it with a beanie or a down jacket/sweatshirt with a hood.
Like under a duvet
Just like with other ultralight gadgets, many new and seasoned hikers are a bit apprehensive about quilts at first, but they are apprehensive unnecessarily! If you look at the gear lists of thru-hikers, the numbers speak clearly – the saved weight combined with great thermal comfort clearly speaks in favor of quilts. If you compare a sleeping bag and a quilt with the same weight and fill power (cuin) of down, the quilt will perform better thermally. It has more down where you need it – in the upper chambers. These thoughtfully designed blankets also have advantages for sleepers who like to toss and turn around at night, or perhaps sleep on their side – you can sleep under a quilt much like under a classic duvet. The quilt stays in place while you turn within it.
Choosing a Quilt
Similarly to choosing a sleeping bag, you should consider its insulation properties and the temperature conditions it’s designed for. Especially with a quilt, the choice of quality and comfortable sleeping pads with sufficient R value, which you'll be sleeping directly on in the case of a quilt. But quilts differ not only in technical parameters but also in various attachment systems to the sleeping pad and construction.
