On the back, from the waist up, the inefficiently used down has been removed, because down compressed by your body weight essentially doesn't insulate and serves practically no purpose. You simply attach the quilt to your [sleeping pad](/c/sleep/sleeping-pads) with a system of well-thought-out straps. When you look at the [gear lists](/blog/how-to-build-an-ultralight-gear-list)of people who have completed long trails, the numbers speak clearly – the weight saved, combined with great thermal comfort, makes a clear case for quilts. In fact, if we compare a sleeping bag and a quilt with the same weight and down fill power (cuin), the quilt will deliver better thermal performance. That's because it has more down where you need it – in the top baffles. These well-thought-out blankets also have advantages for sleepers who like to toss and turn at night or sleep on their side – under a quilt, you'll sleep much like you would under a classic comforter. **The quilt stays in place the whole time while you turn inside it**. While you sleep, you're insulated from above by a generous pile of down and from below by your sleeping pad. Besides technical specs, though, quilts also differ in their construction and in the systems they use to attach to the sleeping pad.
