## Description

The Cumulus neo Quilt 450 is a great sleeping bag alternative for anyone who puts low gear weight first. The quilt is filled with 450 g of top-quality goose down with a fill power of 900 cuin and is built from the extremely lightweight Toray® Airtastic fabric with a DWR treatment. This superbly packable quilt is an ideal choice for long-distance treks and mountain crossings from spring to autumn – and it'll even handle a mild winter.

## How does it differ from a sleeping bag?

To save weight and increase efficiency, quilts are stripped of everything unnecessary. **On its back side, from the waist up, the inefficiently unused down has been removed**, which would be compressed under your body most of the time and would have practically no effect.

Insulation from the ground is handled by your sleeping pad. To keep the back opening positioned under you at all times, the quilt attaches to the sleeping pad using elastic straps. The quilt stays in its base position the whole time, and you turn inside it. The quilt can be used with any type of sleeping pad (inflatable, foam). **The quilt also has no hood**, but you can simply replace it with a beanie or a hooded down jacket/midlayer.

If we compare a sleeping bag and a quilt with the same weight and fill power (cuin) of down, the quilt will have better thermal performance. That's because it has more down where you really need it – in the upper chambers.

## Materials

The manufacturer has gone with the already proven ultralight fabric **Toray® Airtastic 19 g/m²** (7D ripstop nylon), which perfectly combines low weight, durability, breathability, and packability. On the outside, the fabric has a permanent **water-repellent DWR coating**, which holds back light condensation from air humidity or a few drops of water.

Outstanding thermal performance is provided by **450 grams of goose down with a fill power of 900 cuin**. The down-to-feather ratio is 96/4. The quilt's total weight is **610 grams**.

The Cumulus neo Quilt 450 is designed for **three-season use**, so it'll be a reliable companion from spring to autumn. Unless you're seriously prone to feeling cold, **it'll even handle a mild winter**. The manufacturer states a comfort temperature of -2 °C and a limit temperature of -8 °C.

## Construction

The Cumulus neo Quilt 450 has an **open mummy shape** and uses **an H-shaped chamber construction**, which eliminates so-called “cold spots” where two chambers are sewn together. Its width is 83 cm at the shoulders and 52 cm at the feet. The standard size is suitable for people up to 185 cm tall.

The quilt has a **closed footbox** (the space around your feet), which increases thermal comfort and helps reduce the quilt's overall weight. The anatomically shaped footbox construction, called Shark-fin, prevents down compression, is comfortable, and delivers better thermal performance than conventional designs.

**The system of two elastic straps with buckles** allows quick and secure attachment of the quilt to your sleeping pad (50–60 cm wide). You simply slip the straps onto the pad first, then clip the quilt to them. This solution effectively prevents cold air from getting in. You can adjust the width of the back opening by sliding the clips along the elastic strap.

You can minimize heat loss by fastening the buckle at the neck and using **the elastic drawcord** along the top edge of the quilt, which lets you cinch it snugly around your neck and creates **a collar around the neck** from the top chamber, puffed up with down.

## Accessories

- **2 elastic straps** with buckles for attaching to the sleeping pad
- a simple **travel storage sack** with a volume of 4 L and dimensions of 22/16 cm (height/diameter)
- a large **storage bag**, so the quilt isn't needlessly compressed for long periods

The original travel sack can't be compressed further and isn't waterproof, so we recommend getting a sack that solves both of these issues. An ideal choice is, for example, [this compression sack](/p/sea-to-summit-evac-compression-dry-bag) from Sea To Summit, or alternatively its [lightweight ultralight version](/p/sea-to-summit-evac-compression-dry-bag-ul). For this quilt, a sack with a volume of 5–8 liters will be enough.
