## Specifications

Do you have a pile of half-empty gas canisters at home from trips, weekend hikes, and long-distance trails? There’s always some gas left in them, but are you unsure about the amount or how long will they last? For your next trek, do you end up packing two used canisters or buying a new one? With the FlipFuel device, that’s no longer a problem!

This small and handy tool allows you to transfer gas between two partially used canisters. **You can refill one for further use and completely empty the other, making it ready for recycling.** FlipFuel **saves both money and the environment**.

FlipFuel isn’t just useful at home between trips but also on long-distance trails, especially popular ones like the [Pacific Crest Trail](/blog/pacific-crest-trail-pct-guide). Hikers often leave half-empty canisters in hiker boxes at towns and resupply points. With FlipFuel, you won’t need to buy new fuel – you can simply refill it.

The FlipFuel device weighs only **35 grams** and comes with a **user manual** and **two stickers** “Don’t Pack a Halfie.”

## How does FlipFuel work?

FlipFuel serves as a **connecting device between two isobutane canisters**, and the gas transfer operates based on basic physics. First, cool the canister you want to refill while warming the one you want to empty. Cold fuel contracts and condenses, while warm fuel expands. Using the valve on the FlipFuel device, you simply control the flow of gas between the canisters with differing temperatures and pressures.

FlipFuel **should only be used with isobutane gas canisters**, such as those from brands like [**MSR**](/c/cooking/canisters-and-other-fuel), [**Jetboil**](/c/cooking/canisters-and-other-fuel), **Snow Peak** and others. You can mix canisters from different brands as long as they contain the same fuel type.

Perform gas transfers **outdoors** or in **well-ventilated spaces**.

Be careful not to **overfill the receiving fuel canister**. The total weight of a full canister is typically listed on the canister itself. **Weigh your fuel canister on kitchen scales** before refilling to determine the remaining fuel amount and ensure accurate refilling. During the transfer, weigh the canister regularly and adjust cooling/heating as needed to facilitate the gas flow.

**Do not refill a canister indefinitely.** Monitor the condition of the canister and replace it with a new one after approximately 3–5 refills.

Some fuel canisters (for example, MSR) feature a fill line on their body, which can help you estimate the fuel level by [submerging in water](https://youtu.be/b-LIavISXqo?si=hKfXztRugr1FcCaj). If overfilled, you can release excess gas using the **vent button** on the side of the FlipFuel device.

## Usage

- **Cool the fuel canister** you want to refill – ideally in a freezer, refrigerator, or ice water.
- **Warm the fuel canister** you want to empty – ideally in direct sunlight or on a heater. **Never heat it near an open flame!**
- Wait **5–10 minutes** (depending on the conditions in which you are cooling/heating the fuel canisters).
- Screw the FlipFuel with the **valve** **closed** onto both canisters (attach the cooled receiving canister to the side marked "IN"). Tighten securely.
- **Open the valve** on the FlipFuel to enable gas transfer between the canisters.
- Once the transfer is complete, **close the valve** and **unscrew the FlipFuel.** Regularly **check the weight of the receiving canister to avoid overfilling**. The weight of a full canister can usually be found printed on the canister itself.
- If transferring a larger amount of gas, you may need to repeat the cooling/heating process several times.
- In case of **overfilling**, leave the FlipFuel attached to the canister and release some gas using the **"VENT" button** on the FlipFuel device.
