Lightweight travel cookware
Every day on the trail brings countless experiences, breathtaking views, and tough challenges – but let’s be honest, if there’s one thing every trekker looks forward to from the morning, it’s a well-deserved dinner. When cutting down pack weight, many forget that the classic mess tin now has plenty of lighter and, more importantly, more practical alternatives. At Gramino, you’ll find aluminum and titanium cookware designed for trekking, helping you save both grams and hassle on your adventures.
Tradition and future
Aluminum is a tried-and-true material that stands out for its durability and low weight, and compared to other materials, it also offers optimal thermal conductivity. In our selection, you'll find only top-quality aluminum cookware with an anodized finish, which gives the pot greater resistance to scratches, corrosion, and weather effects. Aluminum is just a durable, cost-effective, and relatively lightweight classic that you can always rely on.
Many fans of lightweight hiking have gradually switched to titanium in recent years, which is a material also used in spacecraft manufacturing, among other things. Titanium cookware is incredibly light compared to other metals while maintaining high strength. Plus, titanium is naturally non-toxic and resistant to corrosion. Thanks to its high density, you can make even thinner and lighter cookware than from aluminum. Titanium also has excellent resistance to high temperatures, so you can cook directly over the fire without worry. However, due to its very thin walls and natural properties, heat doesn’t distribute as evenly, making it more suitable for heating and boiling water rather than cooking complex culinary recipes that require longer stirring or frying in oil. Titanium pots are therefore perfect for things like freeze-dried food, which is enough to pour boiling water on, but with a bit of practice on it though you can pretty much cook anything.
Shape matters
Besides various materials, mess kits are made in several different shapes. Tall and narrow pots will keep heated water or food warm for longer, and you'll easily squeeze them into any gap in your backpack, plus they’re usually designed to fit a small or medium fuel canister perfectly. On the flip side, they aren’t as stable in improvised conditions, and water might heat up a bit slower in them. In shallow and wide pots, you generally cook food a little faster, but it cools off more quickly and may not be as compact. When buying a mess kit or pot, don't forget to check out our descriptions where we mention ideas for gear, like stoves or fuel canister, which you can stash inside them to save space.
Some cookware stands out with various technical features, like for example drainage holes (Do you want some pasta?), suspension handle handy for cooking over a fire, or maybe a lid that also serves as pan .
Kitchen on the go
If you're into cooking on your travels, you'll definitely appreciate other ultralight gadgets for your camp kitchen in addition to pots. If you want to avoid fighting over food with your buddies, then you can try something like foldable bowls of silicone. Morning coffee lover will appreciate an equally practical dripper or collapsible mug.
