This trowel is super popular among long-distance hikers, travelers, and fans of ultralight gear. TheTentLab products are designed to be as light as possible, functional, and also support the principles of Leave No Trace.
Why it's important to bury human waste in nature
Toilet trowels from TheTentLab are used for burying human waste in the wild. Unattended excrement poses a health risk to both people and animals and can contaminate water sources. Proper burying helps protect nature and reduces the negative impact of our time outdoors. No tourist or hiker wants to see human waste or used toilet paper right next to the trail.
Basic rules for hygiene in the outdoors
The dug hole should be at least 15–20 cm deep. The spot for doing your business should ideally be at least 70 meters away from paths, campsites, and water sources. Waste breaks down better and faster in places that are exposed to sunlight and rain. So don’t hide in the woods, just go ahead and do your business in the meadow.
How to do it?
After you've chosen a good spot, start digging. If the ground is hard, use the narrow side of the trowel to mark the outline. Then, throw the soil next to the hole. You can hold the trowel with one hand or both hands. Just make sure to push against the curve while working – that’s the only way to keep it sturdy.
After you’ve done your business, fill the hole back in with the original soil and restore the area to its original state. Ideally, take any used toilet paper with you or use the most basic biodegradable option and bury that too. Wet wipes don’t belong in nature because they never break down – take the used ones back with you in a sealable "zip-lock" bag!
Responsible approach to nature
Using a trowel is essential in all places where toilets or latrines aren't available. It's a simple and effective way to maintain basic hygiene while being responsible towards nature according to the Leave No Trace principle.
