DuPont
Tyvek from DuPont is a waterproof film for ultralight use in nature. Tyvek is a lightweight, strong, and water-resistant film made by DuPont, originally used as a waterproof layer under roofing materials. In the outdoor world, however, Tyvek has gained popularity as a reliable footprint for tents, tarps, or sleeping pads. Thanks to its low weight, high durability, and waterproofness, it has become an essential part of the gear for anyone who is counting every gram and wants to protect their equipment at the same time.
Dimensions
On our e-shop Gramino, you'll find Tyvek in two practical sizes. The smaller size 230 x 75 cm is big enough for one inflatable sleeping pad or ultralight tents and tarps for one person. Bigger size 250 x 150 cm is suitable for two inflatable sleeping mats or tents for 2 to 3 people.
It serves as a protective layer between the ground and your gear, preventing mechanical damage to the tent floor or sleeping pad, like from sharp stones, twigs, or dry grass. By using a footprint made of Tyvek, you'll extend the lifespan of your gear and get an extra layer of insulation against moisture from the ground.
Tyvek is also popular among DIY enthusiasts – it can be easily cut, folds down to a small size, and has a wide range of uses when creating ultralight gear.
White side down or printed side down?
It doesn't matter! Tyvek, specifically the Soft Antireflex type, is the most commonly used in the outdoors because of its low weight and affordable price. It’s a diffusion membrane designed as a backup waterproofing for roofs. It’s a solid material with microscopic pores – these are so small that they don't let liquid water through, but they're big enough for water vapor to pass through. Both sides of the material have identical properties, so it doesn’t matter if you lay the white side or the printed side down – it works just as reliably every time.
