Copper Spur UL3 XL is one of the best-selling ultralight tents for three people from the American brand Big Agnes in an extended version. If you value not only low weight but also maximum comfort, this is the right choice. The tent has a rectangular shape, above-standard dimensions, and is loaded with features. The new tent material is equipped with the innovative HyperBead™ technology, making it even lighter, stronger, and more waterproof.

Features
The new Copper Spur tent models for 2025 feature the innovative HyperBead™ technology, which improves the material's strength, increases waterproofing, and reduces weight at the same time (more info below).
Model XL has a rectangular, non-tapered shape with an added length of 15 cm, width of 5 cm, and height at the head of 5 cm compared to Copper Spur UL3.
Thanks to the two zippers at the entrance of the rainfly, you can set up an awning over the vestibules using trekking poles, or other poles or branches. On hot days, the awning gives you shade and during warmer nights, it offers great ventilation while protecting you from dew.
The tent is designed for 3 people and has 2 side doors and 2 vestibules. This way, you'll have plenty of space for your gear. All the zippers have dual sliders and come with ergonomic pull tabs. The rainfly features zippers protected by a storm flap with Velcro. Setting it up during the day or at night is made easier with reflective guy lines.
Setting up the tent is easier thanks to the clever TipLok Tent Buckle™ at the corners of the tent, which has three functions: securing the pole structure, tensioning and attaching the rainfly to the tent body, and staking down.
You'll definitely appreciate the plenty of pockets and storage space in the Copper Spur. The biggest pocket (the so-called 3D bin) is located at the ceiling above your feet. You'll find more smaller flat pockets above your head and on the sides of the inner tent. Inside the tent, there are also loops to attach gear lofts and other gear.
The rainfly isn’t pulled all the way down to the ground, which ensures better air circulation and minimizes the chance of internal condensation. But to make sure that water doesn’t spray into the tent during heavier rains, the tent body (inner tent) is fitted with waterproof material on the sides from the ground up to about 50 cm high.
The rainfly is equipped with vent openings above both doors. Good ventilation is also ensured by two zipper sliders that you can unzip from the bottom and the top. Securing the open doors of the inner tent is made easy with the Quick Stash door keeper.
To ensure extra stability, there are Velcro straps on the inner side of the rainfly, which you use to connect the rainfly to the structure. Setting up the tent is simple and quick thanks to the lightweight and durable DAC Featherlite aluminum pole construction.
You can also use the tent in Fast Fly mode, where you leave the tent body (inner tent) at home and head out with just the poles, rainfly, and stakes. This way, you’ll get to a nice weight of 1 340 grams. However, you’ll need the original footprint, which isn’t included in the package. The footprint will also extend the life of the tent body. If you don’t want to get a footprint, at least consider using tyvek.
With the tent, you'll get a practical compression EZ Pack Stuff Sack, featuring a large longitudinal opening and a compression closure for easy and quick packing.
HyperBead™ technology
In 2025, Big Agnes is bringing a new innovative material treatment technology to their ultralight tents – HyperBead™. Thanks to this advanced waterproof treatment, the tents are lighter, stronger, and more durable than ever before. HyperBead™ contains no PFAS or other harmful substances, offering a safer and more sustainable alternative to standard water-repellent treatments without negatively impacting health and the environment.
Compared to common materials, tents with HyperBead™ technology have:
- 6% lower weight – even lighter ultralight tents,
- 50% higher strength – better tear resistance,
- 25% higher waterproofness – permanent protection without the need for reproofing.
Unlike regular DWR treatments, HyperBead™ is impermeable at the molecular level, so it maintains its effectiveness throughout the tent's lifespan. At the same time, it stretches less in humidity, which contributes to better stability and a longer lifespan of the material.

- The tent is free-standing. That means it can stand on its own even without being anchored with stakes.
