The popular 40-liter version of the Crown3 backpack by Granite Gear is finally back after a few years! Granite Gear's long-term goal is to produce backpacks that are more environmentally friendly, which is why they are introducing the ECO series. The backpack is made using Regen Robic fabric, recycled high-strength nylon fabrics, straps, and foams in the back system. These materials are certified by the Global Recycle Standard.
This could come in handy for you.

The Crown3 40 strikes a perfect balance as an ultralight mid-range backpack, combining the best features of both traditional and ultralight packs: low weight, excellent durability, and exceptional comfort. The new model offers a reduced capacity for those with a more refined gear setup and places even greater emphasis on sustainability through its eco-friendly materials.
This backpack is an ideal choice for anyone looking to lighten their gear while keeping comfort as their top priority.
The Crown3 builds on the success of the Crown2 model, featuring a fully adjustable Re-Fit hip belt, a Vapor Current Mark 3 PE frame with a foam back panel, and a removable lid. The lid can be transformed into a chest pouch or, when paired with the hip belt, into a spacious fanny pack.
Among the thru-hiking community, many hikers have successfully tackled long-distance trails like the PCT, CDT, and AT with Granite Gear backpacks, which speaks volumes about their functionality.
The recommended comfort load limit for this backpack is approximately 15 kg, according to the manufacturer.

The main compartment is a simple long tunnel. The backpack's closure system is designed like that of dry bags—roll the opening several times and secure it with side buckles. A center strap then locks the closure in place while also compressing the pack's contents.
The removable lid of the backpack includes a zippered pocket, perfect for small items such as a headlamp, first-aid kit, or toothbrush. Inside, there are two compartments for better gear organization. The lid offers an additional 5 liters of space (not included in the backpack’s total volume).
The patented RE-FIT hip belt is removable and can be adjusted to fit your waist size. The hip belt includes two zippered pockets for small essentials. When detached, the hip belt can be combined with the lid to create an excellent fanny pack for short hikes.
The back panel is made of contoured, comfortable foam with ventilation holes. The backpack's frame consists of a removable and durable V.C. Mark 3 Frame made of polypropylene.
The stretch mesh on the side pockets is crafted from a more durable material. The pockets are deep and spacious, capable of holding two 1-liter bottles or one larger bottle. An elastic drawcord with a toggle at the top allows you to secure the pocket’s contents easily.
In total, the backpack has 6 compression straps with buckles. They are long enough to attach items like a sleeping pad Therm-a-Rest Z Lite or tent.

The stretch kangaroo pocket on the front of the backpack is perfect for storing a waterproof jacket, trowel, tent stakes, and similar gear.
The backpack also features load-lifter straps, which are especially useful when carrying heavier loads. These allow you to pull the pack closer to your body, improving weight distribution and balance.
Inside the backpack, there’s a loop for hanging a hydration reservoir and an opening for the drinking tube.
Additional features include two removable sternum straps and loops for securing an ice axe or trekking poles.
As is typical for Granite Gear, durability is a priority. This time, the manufacturer has also focused on sustainability. The backpack is made from tough Regen Robic® nylon with a DWR coating, providing light rain protection for your gear. The DWR treatment has also been applied to the zippers on the hip belt and lid. The shoulder and hip straps are well-padded for maximum comfort.
When it comes to details, the backpack is meticulously crafted. The quality of the stitching, buckles, and straps is outstanding. We also appreciate the finer touches, such as branded zipper pulls and the embossed logo on the hip belt buckle.

You can reduce the backpack's weight by removing the aluminum frame, the top lid, or the hip belt. This allows you to save several hundred grams, making it ideal for shorter trips where less gear is needed.
