Usage
The Perimeter 50 stands out with its ability to adapt perfectly to your body. You can adjust the shoulder strap width and torso length by moving the straps horizontally and vertically. The RE-FIT hip belt is removable and can be adjusted to match your waist size, ensuring a perfect fit.
With its versatile features and generous volume, this backpack is ideal for multi-day hikes and long-distance trails. It’s a great choice for both beginners and experienced hikers who don’t prioritize ultralight setups but plan demanding expeditions with heavier loads.
Thanks to its sturdy back support, featuring a rigid plastic panel and a steel stay, the Perimeter 50 handles heavier loads better than most ultralight backpacks while effectively transferring weight to the hips. The manufacturer rates the pack’s load capacity at 18 kg. The weight of the backpack is 1 440 grams for the Regular size and 1 560 grams for the Long size.
Features
The main compartment closes with a drawstring and toggle secured by two compression straps, forming a long tunnel with a hydration sleeve.
The flat, detachable lid includes a zippered pocket for small essentials like a headlamp or toothbrush. Additional gear, such as a sleeping pad, can be attached under the lid.
The hip belt features two spacious zippered pockets, large enough to hold even a bigger smartphone.
The tall side stretch pockets easily accommodate 2-liter bottles.
With a total of six compression straps with buckles, the backpack compresses well, maintaining a streamlined shape even when only partially filled. These straps are also perfect for attaching a tent, sleeping pad, or other gear.
On the front of the pack, there is one large and one small stretch pocket, ideal for a waterproof jacket, wet rainfly, trowel, stakes, and similar items.
The pack includes load-lifter straps, which help improve balance by pulling the backpack closer to your body, especially when carrying heavier loads.
A flat zippered pocket on the bottom is suitable for storing a rain cover or trash. One side of this pocket is sewn into the pack, while the other side features straps and buckles, allowing you to secure bulky items like a tent or sleeping pad.
Inside the backpack, there’s a loop for hanging a hydration reservoir and a port for the drinking tube.
Additional features include a removable sternum strap and attachment loops for an ice axe or trekking poles.
Materials
As is typical for Granite Gear, the Perimeter 50 is built with durability in mind. The backpack is made from robust 100D and 210D Robic high-tenacity nylon treated with a DWR coating, reinforced at high-stress areas. The zippers on the hip belt and lid are also DWR-treated, offering resistance to light rain. However, we recommend protecting essential gear, such as a sleeping bag, in waterproof bags to ensure it stays dry.
Designed to handle heavier loads, the backpack features superior padding on the shoulder straps and back panel. Compared to similar models, such as theGranite Gear Crown2 60, the Perimeter 50 has approximately double the padding thickness on the shoulder straps.
When it comes to details, the backpack is meticulously crafted. The quality of the stitching, buckles, and straps is outstanding. We also appreciate the finer touches, such as branded zipper pulls and the embossed logo on the lid.
