The new improved version of the popular Hyperlite Mountain Gear Junction 40 backpack for 2025. This backpack has won the hearts of long-distance hikers all around the world, and now it comes with upgraded materials and several structural tweaks. Thanks to that, it's even more durable, comfortable, and functional – ready for your next adventure in the mountains or on long-distance trails.
Who is this product suitable for?

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Junction backpack is a symbol of versatility and adaptability. It combines two side pockets made of durable material and a large front mesh pocket that's perfect for drying wet clothes or gear. It's great for a wide range of conditions – from narrow overgrown trails to rocky terrain and humid mountain crossings.
The 40-liter volume is just right for shorter and weekend hikes. Thanks to the roll-top closure and compression straps on each side, you can easily shrink the backpack, making it useful even for day hikes in the mountains. If you want to embark on longer adventures with the Junction 40 backpack, you'll really need to have a well-tuned and lightweight gear list, plus the ability to regularly (every 2–4 days) replenish your food supplies along the way.
Backpacks from Hyperlite Mountain Gear are among the most popular for long-distance hikes in America, like the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail, and we think that says a lot (this info comes from annual surveys on the blog halfwayanywhere.com).

In 2025, HMG backpacks (Junction, Southwest, and Windrider) are coming with several major changes, based on thousands of kilometers of field experience:

The stated parameters are for size Medium.

The main part of the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest backpack is made from a new material. Dyneema® Woven Composite 3.9, which brings a combination of low weight, high strength, and top-notch abrasion resistance. Thanks to the fully woven outer layer made from Dyneema® fibers, the material is extremely strong and durable, feels nicer to the touch, holds its shape better, and doesn't make annoying noises even in cold weather.
The material itself is 100% waterproof, but the stitching might create tiny holes. Even though more than 90% of the seams on the backpack are taped, you can't call it 100% waterproof. For complete protection against water and moisture, we recommend adding a waterproof bags.
The side pockets of the backpack and the pockets on the hip belt are made from a highly durable and strong material Hardline with Dyneema®, which can handle tough terrain. The large front pocket is made of thick mesh with an elastic hem.
