There is no better way to effectively assess a backpack's design than to send it on a thru-hike. Over more than 3 000 kilometers and an average of five to six months, day after day, loaded, shaken, dragged, and exposed to the elements – this is where the truth is revealed. This is exactly the kind of expedition backpack that HMG was looking for, and the Unbound 40 is the result.

Every carefully thought-out feature fought for its right to remain, leaving only what is essential for an efficient, comfortable, adaptable, and reliable backpack. Long-distance trails are tough, so let a portion of the weight rest on the Unbound 40 backpack.

The volume of 40 liters is ideal for resupply windows of 2-5 days with a well-tuned gear list. Thanks to the roll-top closure, removable hip belt, and internal reinforcement, the Unbound 40 can also be used for single-day mountain climbs.

Backpack reinforcement: The backpack is reinforced with one molded aluminum frame, which is easily removable.

Seam sealing: All vertical seams and all sewn elements of the backpack are sealed with waterproof tape, ensuring great waterproofness of the backpack.

Large stretch pocket: A large pass-through pocket with dual access on the front provides important storage space and quick access for items such as a wet tent/tarp, food, water filter, tent stakes, etc. The pocket is made from durable Dyneema® Stretch Mesh material.

Side pockets: Really spacious side pockets are equipped with drawstrings and can easily accommodate 2-liter bottles or additional gear.

Bottom (trash) pocket: The bottom stretch pocket is made from durable Dyneema® Stretch Mesh material and is ideal for easy access to snacks, a waterproof jacket, or trash.

Daisy chain: Four orange vertical straps with holes are sewn into the seams of the backpack and are used to attach additional gear and to customize the backpack for a specific expedition.

Materials

Dyneema® fiber is a revolutionary material not only in the outdoor industry. With its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, it is the strongest fiber in the world. Dyneema® fibers are 15x stronger than high-quality steel, lightweight, abrasion-resistant, waterproof, and resistant to UV radiation and chemicals.

The HMG Unbound 40 backpack in white is constructed from hybrid composite Dyneema® fabric—Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 3.8 (120 g/m², DCH50) and Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 5.1 (170 g/m², DCH150) on the bottom and back panel. The HMG Unbound 40 backpack in black is fully constructed from the more durable Dyneema® material—Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 5.1 (170 g/m², DCH150).

This material is created by combining and laminating additional layers with Dyneema® fibers. This material excels in high abrasion resistance, exceptional strength, outstanding rip-stop properties, and moisture impermeability.

Although the material itself is 100% waterproof, stitching creates tiny perforations. While most (more than 90%) seams in the backpack are taped, it cannot be considered completely waterproof. For full protection against water and moisture, we recommend using the backpack with waterproof dry bags.
