As a shelter
The Pyraomm poncho has a pyramid shape. This shape stands out with really great wind resistance. If the tarp is well secured with stakes and the trekking pole is firmly in place, the tarp has nowhere to collapse in strong winds. It also excels in rain, as water simply drains off due to the steep walls. Pyramids have a really low weight and are super easy to set up.
The tarp has a total of 10 tie-out points with Linelocks. The entrance features a water-resistant YKK AquaGuard zipper. The package also includes durable UHMW PE cords.
Setup:
- Spread the tarp into a rectangular shape and stake down the corners.
- In the tent, stick one trekking pole in at an angle or place 2 trekking poles in an A-shape. Cover the tips of the trekking poles with caps or stick them into the ground.
- Tighten the guy lines for optimal tension on the tarp.
- If needed, add more guy lines.
Like a poncho
The adjustable hood and brim let you customize the poncho just the way you need it. The Pyraomm Poncho doesn’t restrict your movement while walking, even when you've got a backpack on your back. An elastic cord with a buckle keeps the poncho secure in strong winds, and the front zip on your chest offers extra comfort and a chance for additional ventilation. The poncho is closed from all sides, so it provides great protection in the rain.
Use:
- Put on the poncho over your head.
- Wrap the back part of the poncho around yourself.
- Secure the poncho with an elastic band and buckle.
- Adjust your hood.

The manufacturer went for polyester instead of traditional nylon (polyamide), which you'll find in most ultralight tents. The reason is that wet polyester doesn't sag as much and doesn't absorb as much water, so it also dries faster.
Watch out, the seams aren't taped! Since the tent is made from silicone-coated polyester, you can't seal them with waterproof polyurethane tape like you can with most tents (it won't stick to the silicone surface). You'll need to apply silicone adhesive/coating to the seams from the outside before using it. You can use Gear Aid Seam Grip +Sil 28g or you can prepare the sealant at home using sanitary silicone and paint thinner (white spirit) (in a ratio of about 1:2, with a consistency similar to oil).
Stakes are not included in the package. You'll need at least four stakes for setup, but it's better to arm yourself with at least eight.
